One team for the screed, the pump and the finish

If you are planning a new floor in Southport, Roberts Concrete Pumping can take it from delivery to a level surface. We are a family business from Cheshire, and the crew that brings the liquid screed also pumps it in and levels it, so there is no gap between supplier and installer for things to fall through. Southport is the northern edge of the area we work, which also takes in the rest of Merseyside, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and the North Wales border.

Liquid floor screed arrives as a runny mix, travels through a hose and settles flat under its own weight. That makes it a good match for extensions, new houses, refurbishments and underfloor heating, and it means the room can be a long way back from the road or behind a house with no side gate.

Calls usually start with a builder or plumber passing on our number. The questions are rarely about the screed itself. People want to know whether the insulation and pipes are ready, whether the pour can slot in between the other trades, and how the day will run. We answer all of that before anything is booked.

Local to Southport

Liquid screed in Southport, from Birkdale villas to new Churchtown streets

Much of Southport was built for the Victorian resort. Birkdale Park was laid out from 1850 with large detached villas, many of them Italianate, and it is now one of several conservation areas in the town, along with Lord Street, the Promenade, Hesketh Road, West Birkdale and Churchtown Village. Plenty of these big houses have since become schools or apartments, and central Southport has seen enough houses split into shared homes that Sefton Council now asks for planning permission for even small HMOs there. When a ground floor in a building like that is renewed, a pumped screed reaches the room by hose rather than by barrow through a period hallway.

New housing is arriving too. The adopted Sefton Local Plan (April 2017) allocates its largest single site at Crowland Street, with an indicative 678 homes, alongside 450 at Moss Lane in Churchtown, 300 at Bankfield Lane, 174 beside Dobbies on Benthams Way and 158 on the former Phillips factory at Balmoral Drive. At Bankfield Lane, Wainhomes had a second phase of 156 homes approved in 2021. Every one of those houses needs a ground floor, and many will have underfloor heating.

Southport is a longer run up from Cheshire than most towns we cover, and the Local Plan itself notes the town has no fast link to the motorway network. Jobs here are reached on the A570 from the M58 or along the A565, and we plan the arrival time around that. Roberts has no office or yard in Southport: we drive up for each job.

How it works

From first call to finished floor

  1. Send the details

Ring or WhatsApp with the postcode, the room or rooms, an approximate area in m2, whether UFH is going in and the week you are aiming for.

  2. We check the floor is ready

Insulation, perimeter strip, membrane and any heating pipes are gone through with you, so nothing holds up the pour.

  3. The pour

We pump the liquid screed in and level it, working to the times agreed with your builder and anyone else on site.

  4. Afterwards

You get advice on ventilation, when the floor can be walked on and when to start thinking about the final floor covering.

Before pour day

Before a pour date goes in the diary

  • How big the floor is and how the hose will reach it
  • Whether the insulation, edge strip and membrane are finished
  • Underfloor heating: fitted, filled and tested, or not part of the job
  • The date, and who else will be working on site that week
Start your quote

Liquid screed is a good choice for

  • Rooms that need a flat, even base for tiles, engineered boards or LVT
  • Floors with underfloor heating pipes laid out
  • Extensions and new builds working to a schedule
  • Properties where there is no practical barrow or mixer route to the room

When to hold off

  • The insulation, edge strip or membrane are not finished yet
  • The pour cannot be lined up with the other trades on site
  • You only want to hire a pump without an operator

If something else would suit your floor better, we will say so at the start.

Area, access, preparation, heating and timing are agreed before the pour, not discovered during it.

Domestic or trade

A single extension for a homeowner or a row of plots for a contractor, the approach is matched to the job.

Questions

Liquid screed in Southport: common questions

Do you cover the whole of Southport?

Yes. PR8 and PR9 are both in our area, from Woodvale and Ainsdale in the south, through Birkdale and the town centre, up to Churchtown, Marshside and Crossens. Formby (L37) is covered too. We travel from Cheshire for each job, so send your postcode and we will confirm.

How long does liquid screed take to dry?

Light foot traffic is often possible after a day or two, but drying enough for flooring takes weeks rather than days. A common guide for anhydrite screed is about one day per millimetre up to 40mm, slower beyond that. A moisture test, not the calendar, tells you when the floor covering can go down.

How much does liquid screed cost per m2 in Southport?

There is no single rate per m2. The price depends on the floor area, the depth, the type of screed, any underfloor heating, how far the hose has to run and the timing. Send us those details and we will quote for your floor.

Can you screed a ground floor flat or the back of a large period house?

Usually, yes. The hose can be run through a hallway, side passage or window to reach rooms well back from the road, which suits converted villas and older Southport streets where houses open almost straight onto the pavement. We go through the route with you before booking.

Do you only supply liquid screed, or lay it as well?

We supply it and lay it. We do not hire out pumps without an operator, because pouring and levelling the screed properly is a big part of getting a good floor.

How far ahead should I book liquid screed?

Get in touch once you know when the building will be weathertight and the floor build-up finished. Southport is a longer drive for us, so a little notice helps us line the pour up with your builder.
